Solutions - Storage management complexity

Before Virsto One

We've been in the storage management business for a couple decades, and we'll be the first to confess: Storage management never has been fun, and probably won't ever be. As painful as it is for physical servers, the headaches get notably worse when you virtualize. Does your virtual machine (VM) storage management flowchart look something like this – infinite loops, and no way to get to nirvana?

Storage Management

Backup isn’t a choice. It’s a necessity. It’s also a CPU and I/O hog. That was ok when we were running servers at 7% utilization. Now we’ve consolidated servers and no longer have that headroom, so firing up a backup job can really slow down the application being backed up. But the problem is pernicious, because all the other VMs on the physical server are also impacted. Not ok.

Sure, you can spend more money on backup hardware and software, but budgets are tight. You can add headcount to manage the process more efficiently, but that costs money too.

Provisioning is another problem. Every creation of a VM requires provisioning of storage, but provisioning processes designed for physical servers often assume provisioning is an infrequent activity that involves coordination amongst server, SAN, and storage management teams. That’s too complex for the dynamic VM world. Provisioning storage is something a server admin can do quickly, simply, and correctly.

The hypervisor has many benefits, but simplifying storage management hasn’t been one of them.

With Virsto One

Virsto One always optimizes utilization of available storage.  Our thin provisioning allows for instant snapshots and clones, available for use at a moments notice.   Enabling fast off-host back up that does not impact application performance is one of the benefits of snapshot and cloning.  We believe storage management should be simple and easy.
